My husband pulled the engine on our 1954 Cockshutt and replaced the rear main seal. When he went to engage the starter it turned over several times it seized up. He did prime it and it had good oil pressure. Pulled the starter, not the problem. Tractor had sat many years..before pulling the engine again what could we check? (Won't crank forward or backwards)...

Are you talking the rear seal in that plate? Did the engine turn over before you put the rear main seal in? Please explain a little more. J.

Sounds like the cylinders where dry and caused it ti lock up. I would fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and let it sit a few days and see what happens before pulling the engine again.
