8N Starting troubles

I have a '52(?) 8N tractor that I am having trouble starting. I recently tuned it up, thinking that was the problem, but it hasn't helped. I also re-wired this past summer since mice had chewed the harness, but again, this didn't help. When I push the starter button, the engine cranks, but then it changes to almost a high pitched humming sound, with no more engine cranking. I stop pushing, then repeat, with the same results. The battery was replaced when I re-wired, so it's not the battery, either. The problem is worse since it has gotten colder, and now I can't start at all. At least during the summer it would eventually start! I'm wondering if anyone can help me with what the problem might be--I'm thinking starter, or maybe a carbourator re-build? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

It sounds like your starter drive ("Bendix") is malfunctioning, and releasing before the engine starts.

The newer drives are called "positive", as they aren't supposed to release until the engine starts.

As with everything, there are good and bad ones of those, too, with some not-so-good imports around these days.

I wish I could tell you for sure where to pick up a GOOD unit nowadays.

Damon,

Apparently, that is the complete starter.

If your starter MOTOR is working properly, you can just replace the "DRIVE" for about $30 to $40. This site has those, too.

I have to cut this short, as I have a family outing to attend to.

Go over the "N" forum and do an archive search for "Removing Starter", and "Replacing Starter Drive".

If you need more info, post back, and someone will help, or I will reply later.
