I have a Long 360 tractor that will only steer to the left. Once the tractor is started, the power steering steers hard left and remains locked in that position. The power steering hydraulic cylinder was recently rebuilt and that did not solve the problem. If you have any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any followup.

Dale, you have to adjust the valve at the end of the cylinder. It will take a lot of typing to explain it to you. Send me an email and maybe we can talk by phone. The adjustment is made by loosening the clamp on the cylinder and lengthening or shortening the cylinder by screwimg the smooth, polished part of the cylinder. Jack up the front axle and with the engine running, adjust the length. If you turn it too far one way, it will go to the left. If you go too far the other way, It will go to the right. It has been years since I have done this. I can't tell you which way to adjust first. Trial and error will work. You will know when you have it right. It will be in a neutral position until you turn the wheel. Best of luck.

UTB 640DTC power steering... in reply to Jim in NC, 01-31-2007 18:57:32
third party image

Jim,

As it seems you know about these things I'll pose my current power steering problem with our UTB 640DTC to you (and to the rest of the forum). Steering is erratic, the wheel feels 'bumpy' and it feels like I have to manually force the wheels in the direction I want them to be before the power steering comes in.
With power off and the front wheels off the ground I can manually push the wheels (and the power steering cylinder) towards a left turn (pushing the piston into the steering cylinder). Also without power it is easy to turn the wheels in one direction using the steering wheel, but in the other direction I can rotate the steering wheel many times before the wheels turn. Once I've got them turning it works in both directions but as soon as I stop turning the wheel for a few seconds this 'freewheeling' effect sets in again.

Looking at the hydraulic fluid I notice that it has some foam on top and seems to contain quite a bit of air bubbles.

The tie rod ends are worn and need to be replaced, as does the ball joint at the frame end of the power steering cylinder.

I will need to adjust the steering once I've replaced the tie rod ends and ball joint. As I have no service manual (do you? Can I copy it? Pretty please? I've been searching for one for more than 2 years now... :-) I have no data to go on... So if you (or anyone else who knows this model/series) can help me out I'd be much obliged.

BTW, this tractor has fully hydraulic steering - no mechanical link between the wheel and the steering cylinder or front. Just the manual pump thing under the steering column.

TIA//Frank

Frank, I have never seen one quite like this. Looks a little like a 560 or 610 4wd Long. I am not familiar with the steering system on these. All the Longs I have had were 2wd. The foaming of the oil may indicate the wrong type of oil for the application. I have used 30wt nondetergent in them as well as R&O hydraulic oil and regular hyd oil. My tractors are totally mechanical steering with a cylinder for power assist steering. The only free-wheeling mine would experience would be from a splined shaft being worn or a key being broken. Could this be a possibility? My steering will work if the "power" part does not. Try posting this question on the "orphans board" and see if you can get help. I have a manual, but I do not believe it will help you. If I come across something, I will let you know. I have marked this page.

Thanks for the reply. The oil has been in the tractor ever since I bought it, about 2.5 years ago. The 640DTC supposedly is derived from the FIAT 640DT. Steering is completely hydraulic (orbitrol type), no mechanical linkage. There are vanes in the steering controller (under the steering wheel) to give some steering when the engine is off. I suspect there is air trapped in the system between the controller and the actuator. Question is where to get it out without upsetting things - this steering system seems to have a reputation of having a life of its own when not properly adjusted...

I do not know if it will make you it to you, but I sent you a schematic of a hydrostatic steering system used on Longs of that era. It was a rather large file and one email route would not sent it because of its' size. let me know if you don't get it. If I have to, I will stick it in an envelope.

Some mail system somewhere must have eaten that file as it did not arrive here. Try the following address (mutilated a bit to foil the spammers):

g r o t e b r o e r AT g m a i l DOT c o m

If you have more documentation on the Long (which was built by UTB and so will have many similarities with my tractor) I'd be much obliged. I've been trying to get hol of service documentation for more than two years, without any luck so far... The UTB 640DT is an upscaled version of the UTB 530DT (the former having a 4 cylinder 3595 cm2 68 DIN HP engine, the latter a 3 cylinder/2595 cm2/53 DIN HP version of that engine model. Both were available in 2WD and FWA versions (I have the FWA). Long never imported the 640 but they might have had the 530 or a similar model?

TIA//Frank [ who would have mailed you personally would it not for the fact that the mail function on the board seems to be misconfigured... ]

Made it in once piece, thanks! I converted it to PDF and sent it back in case you're interested in having a smaller file size. If you have more of these documents I'm very interested, the description is a more or less perfect match to my tractor...
