Of all the jobs I performed during a major rebuild of my 70D, one of the toughest was upper and lower water pipe installation. For that I tried many things, but what worked best for me was to cut three or four strips of shim from an old paint can, and then file the burrs off so they were smooth. Then I oriented them lengthways into the bore, so that they would hold the o-ring in place while I pushed the greased up pipe into place. Then I pulled the shims out and it was done. It took less time to talk about it than to do it ! You might want to have an extra o-ring or two on hand to save a trip back to town in case you cut one or one rolls under the workbench.

Try liquid dish soap, or rubber lubricant (used for mounting tires), or Armor All to slick up the "O" rings.
