I am restoring a Cub Cadet 149. Presently I am cleaning the engine before painting. I have degreased the big stuff off and now must go into the cracks and crevices. From what I have heard I should not use my sandblaster. All sheet metal is removed and also the flywheel. What is good process to do the final clean before appling primer? There is some old soft paint and light oil film. Soap and water? Comet? Should I apply deruster to flywheel and prime and paint?

You could try Castrol super clean. It's biodegragable and worked excellent when I tried it. Rinses off with water. Dave

I have had good luck using purple passion from the auto parts store. Put it in a yard sprayer and spray it on 100% and it takes all the grease etc off, pressure wash it off is best, but if left on too long will strip the paint. Al using mineral spirits in a sprayer works good for grease and oil.

I use an engine degreaser and a preassure washer and then more degreaser and more wash. Now if you where going to rebuild the engine then the best way is the machine shop hot tank but that can't be done unless you rebuild it

Bag of rags, small picks and a whole lot of elbow grease and patience. Make sure totally clean before paint. No gas wiping before primer and paint. Use a good etch.

MEK cleans real well. As old stated dish soap and wash at high pressure. Acetone is good etch. Mek as others as well work good. Steam clean is another option. Many methods to choose from. What type of paint are you planning on using?? Search archives for more info.

I'm using paint from NAPA for body work. What's good for engine priming and painting?
