I have recently acquired an old Ford 800. From the serial number, I am thinking it is a 1957, but am not sure. The serial number has a diamond, then 4 digits, then a big space, then two more digits...making it kind of difficult. There was no battery in it. I am trying to figure out if it has been converted to 12V, or is still 6V. Can anyone tell me ohm readings from 6V or 12V starters, or will the coils measure different, or a better way to determine the voltage? I would like to know the voltage before I hit the starter with 12V. Thanks for any help in advance!

You guys really know your stuff. Turns out, it is 12V has an alternator, and resistor just like ya'll said. Just wanted to thank you guys for all the help. I'm sure I'll be back soon with more questions as soon as I dig deeper into it!

If it is a 6 volter, the she will be a POSITIVE ground. If 12 volt, the NEGATIVE ground.
If you find out she is 6 volt, and put a 6v battery in her, you can still jump her with a 12 volt battery to increase turn over speed to get her to fire. 6 volters must be damn near perfect to start regularly (super clean connections, replace battery cables with 00 guage cables, and I run my pos. ground all the way back to starter mounting bolt. If you jump with 12v batter, do NOT jump at battery. Instead remember to ground the jumper cable on the positive post to tractor frame and place the neg clamp directly on the starter post. This will bypass the fragile wirings of the ignition system.

First off the starter doesn't care if you use a 6 volt or 12 volt battery, it will work with either one and not hurt it. Best way to tell if its 6 volt or 12 volt is if it has a genny or an alternator on it. That being said it could have a genny that was rewired to 12 volts but not as likely as an alternator put on. Little thing to look for/at are the coil and if it say 6 or 12 volts on it. Also where or not it has a ballast resister between the coil and the switch. If it has one then its most likely 12 volt if not then again you need to look at what the coil says on it since they can be either one.

This tractor hasn"t been started in 10 years. 10 years ago it ran fine...just got parked in the elements. I pulled the plugs, and sprayed inside with WD40 to help break the rings loose just in case they had rusted to the cylinder wall. Now, I can can turn the nut on the end of the crank. Is there any advice you would give, before I rebuild the carb and try to fire it up. After I see that it fires and runs, I will change all the fluids etc.

I would fill the cylinders with tranny fluid. That WD40 doesn't do much for it and can also cause other problems since its a silicone base oil. If its been that long its most likely still 6 volts but if it where my tractor I would start it with a 12 volt battery just to have more power to it the first time. I bring a lot of dead tractors back to life and have a good many that I have done that to
