I have one of the originalFord 8Ns(1947 according to the serial number and on line records). If I try to undo the oil filter drain plug, and pull hard enough, the starter motor starts up and turns the engine over, and it won't stop. The only way to stop it is to put it in gear and use the clutch. I still have not been able to get the drain plug out. I know I could disconnect the battery, but it is too fascinating. Any ideas why this happens. It is very dangerous because you are standing between the wheels. The first time it was in gear so that was alarming.

I BELIEVE THAT A METAL LINE GOES FROM THE OIL FILTER TO THE GAUGE UNDER THE DASH. CHECK TO SEE IT IT MAKES CONTACT WITH BARE WIRING OR CONTACTS WHEN YOU TORQUE ON THE FILTER.

pull the starter and take a look at it. im thinking maybe the bendix is stuck out and for some reason whatever is going on near the oil filler is completing a circiut causing the starter to engage, maybe a ground issue. try hooking up jumper cables to the starter off the tractor and see what happens. not familiar with the old fords, but something has to be causing the starter to energize.

There is a three-terminal solenod sitting on top of the starter. It is "odd" compared to most modern starter solenoids in the respect that GROUNDING the 3rd (small) terminal will cause the solenoid to engage. That is what the tranny-top "neutral safety" start switch does.

Whatever he is doing must be shorting that terminal (or the wire connected to it) to ground.

That solenoid is strange and probably the cause. I would be shorting the tractor to ground when I pulled on the wrench. If a grounding allowed the solenoid to close I can connect up a volt meter and check what is happening. It will be a few weeks before I can get to it, but if I can I will report back. I really apreciate the help - and especially the funny comments. Thanks guys.

Honest it is not a leg pull, it really does exactly what I described, but you have given me an idea. The tractor is with my ex in Virginia but I am sure she will let me take it to a tractor fair for others to see it, and maybe come up with a reason. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and have been working on machines since I ws a kid ( a real long time) so its not like I have no clue about engines, but I am stumped here. Mind you someone suggested maybe my ex had rigged it to run me over, it nearly did. I will have to take it to a fair in Virginia. But honestly it does it so any ideas welcome. I am simple enough to not care about looking dumb, I just want to figure it out.
