I have a CC 149 fuel tank that set empty for a year. Now I have much rust and pin holes in bottom. Can I cut off the bottom, clean tank, and braze a stainless bottom onto the tank? What are drawbacks?

You can get the tank sealer at J C Whitney I prefer the 3 part that has a bottle of etchant, cleaner and the sealer. Search for gas tank sealer on their Web site FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS to get a good seal

To clean inside the tank, I used about 3 hand fulls of gravel. I washed the gravel first then dumped into the tank. This was a smaller 18gal tank that I would easily be able to remove the gravel. Other people reccomend using nuts and bolts so you can remove them with a magnet. Fill it about 1/3 full of water and get your excercise shaking it back and forth. Rotate 90degrees and shake some more. After about 10 minutes and a few rinses it looked pretty clean to me. The final rinse I poured in about a pint of Acetone to scour off any oil/Gas residue. Shake that around, dump out, and I let the tank dry for about an hour infront of a fan to blow air gently through. Then I applied the Kreem.

I found Kreem advertised in Antique Power magazine. Sold by McElroy Enterprises in Ft. Dodge IA. 1-800-397-3669

Who carries "Kreem"? What did you do about internal rust before applying the Kreem?

I just repaired a tank for my Graham bradley with the same problem. It should be easier to fix than cutting into the tank. First I used Bondo on the bottom outside to fill the large holes. I sanded it back down smooth then filled the tank with "Kreem". It is like a very thick gas resistant paint. You are supposed to roll the tank around and coat all sides with the stuff. After two coats of that it has a very thick seal on the bottom and sides of the tank. I am sure that it will last me another 50 years.

So far I am impressed with the "Kreem" sealant. There is another brand out there, one they sell at Valubuilt tractor parts. If anybody knows of any drawbacks of the liquid sealants I would like to know.

Good luck..

Kreem has been around a long time. I first used it around 30 years ago. Used to be most popular for fixing motorcycle tanks to seal rust. Now - just about anybody that sells ATVs or motorcycles sells it. Just to a net-seach with "kreem" and "tank repair" and you'll find many places selling it. It does work well and last. The 1959 Royal Enfield bike I fixed in the early 70s still holds gas.
