Took the engine block to the car wash and was hoping that the pressurized water with the soap mix would clean the grease off without using a stronger cleaning agent which may remove the Glyptal coating.
Naturally I came out looking like a Dalmation! The engine block is still 99% a greasy mess. Nothing like when I used the oven cleaner on the rest of the chassis...But that did effect the coating!
So, what is an effective way to clean the block and save the coating?

I say why try to save the coating? You can buy glyptal and reapply it. Eastwoodco.com sells it in quart cans. The best way to clean a block is by letting the machine shop do it with professional equipment. I recently restored my hydraulic cover which was originally coated inside. There was some surface rust and I ended up glass bead blasting it and flushing it with a power wash. I epoxy primed the outside, and I applied fresh glyptal to the surface that originally had it. Lacquer thinner will dissolve engine grease/dirt, but don"t get it on your hands as it will dry them out and cause your hands to crack and is a known carcinogeon. Use Nitrile gloves. They will hold up way better than latex. Be careful with other glove types so that they don"t get dissolved on on your block. Boraxo works very well on removing the grease from your hands, I wonder how it would work cleaning the block. It seems to bond to grease.

Bruce,

Back in the 1980's that seemed to be the new hot ticket , but it seems like it will stand
up to oil but not water. Any of the engines that
came in my shop that had any moisture in the oil,
the glyptal peeled off in sheets. The original
red lead coating seemed to be better that the glyptal. When I run one thru the hot tank and
steam clean it there is nothing left inside the
block, the best thing to put back seems to be
the gray paint -- last blast or cast blast ,they
stay put .
