Help! I'm afraid I have a major problem with my 4630 engine. As I was turning around on the headland yesterday, the engine began to loose rpm's and sounded like it was under heavy load. Before I could push in the clutch and pull the fuel shut off, she died. The engine will still turn over with the starter, though you can tell the starter has to labor extra hard to turn it over. I checked the dipstick and the engine oil is right where it should be. The oil was changed about 30 hours ago and it had good oil pressure, so I don't think lack of oil is the problem. Also, the engine was not running hot. This tractor has 7900 hours. I don't have any blow-by to speak of. The tractor has been well cared for and oil changed every 100 hours. I think a main bearing failed. What are the chances the crankshaft is still OK? Could it be something else, like an oil pump failure? This old tractor is only worth $10,000 when running. I don't want to put more into this tractor than it's worth. Any ideas?

Doesn't sound good. Very unlikely it has anything to do with fuel filter or injector pump.Remove the hydraulic pump coupling first and see if it will turn over any easier since it happened when you were using a lot of hydraulics. Its possible that you have spun a bearing or even worse, broke the crankshaft. Don't try to start it if it still turns hard after removiong the pump coupling. That could do even more damage.
Whatever,----- cranks can be turned and mains can be line bored,----- but if you have to hire it done, it won't be cheap. Not that many hours on your tractor .A nice looking 4630 with that many hours will still bring $15,000- $17,000 around here.

Well, not good news. We pulled the pan off and No3 main is toast. Bright blue everywhere. We ruined the crank and the block. Unless we find a cheap 404 somwhere, it"s a salvage tractor.

I'll bet ya could save the block with a True line bore not a hone job . But as for the crank we'll hold services for it . Just all depends on how well ya like the tractor to wheather ya want to spend the bucks to fix .

I can get a 404 out of a 7700 for $2500 or a 466 out of a 7720 for $3500. Most of these combine engines have about 2500 to 3500 hours on them. Of course, I have to change the flywheel and bolt on the intercooler. I guess my question is, has anyone had any luck with used combine engines? Are they worth the trouble?

Go with the 466, worth the extra money. Try to find one above engine number 161003, so it will have a crankshaft driven oil pump.

Sounds like a plugged fuel filter (simple) or maybe an injector pump (not as simple) to me. I had a 4020 do the same thing a few years back. It was the injector pump.

Good Luck
