Weld sheared PTO shaft?

I sheared the splined PTO shaft on my tiller this weekend (Don't ask!) and am probably going to have to find a way to repair it b/c Long isn't around anymore to send me another.

Can this be welded? Have any of you welded something like before? Has it held up?

I know safety is an issue. I don't like the thought of tilling along and having the weld break and the PTO shaft flapping around, but I also don't like the $400 that's in the toilet if this can't be repaired... A safety yoke surrounding the PTO shaft could be fabricated to contain it if the weld breaks.

Let me know what yinz think. Thanks!!

Gerald,
Take the shaft to a good welder and he should be able to fix it .

I have fixed a few shafts by beveling each end to almost a point and then lining up by using a piece of angle iron like a v-block . Tack weld the shaft 3 places about 120 degrees apart and then weld , weld , weld .

If you have a machine shop make one , the cost will likely be high . Cutting the splines will be the expensive part . It is pretty specialized and requires special cutters . Welding should not cost you more than an hour or so labor .

Good Luck !

I actually took it to a welder Sat am and that's about what he's going to do. Luckily, the break is further than the deepest that the slip clutch slides on, so the splines won't have to be re-cut.

Thanks guys. I think I am going to attempt the welding option first. If it breaks again, then I can drop the $400 for the new part...

Don't waste the time and money to try and patch a highly stressed shaft like this. You may be able to have a machine shop make a new one for little more than the price of patching, most u-joints and yokes are available as replacement parts. IMHO. Gene Davis

A competent weldor should be able to repair the shaft. If done correctly, the weld can be as strong or stronger than the base metal. You might also do some searching with Google or your favorite internet search engine and find a shop that can just make a complete shaft for you.

Just wanted to follow up. I got it welded for $40 by the areas "best" welder and finally, after smashing my pinky in the process, got it hooked up and tilling. Looks like it's working and holding up well. Must've tilled for over 3 hours yesterday.

Weldng is definitely the way to go, especially with something like this that would've cost like over $500 to fix right.

Thanks again.
