Just need some advice I have fitted a brand new 1983 Briggs and stratton 4.0hp to my lawnmower filled with oil and put some fuel in,The problem is it seems 'stiff' 'gritty' to pull over it seems to run OK at higher revs but at lower revs it sounds like it back fires 'knocking' then stalls, does it just need running in, I have never had a brand new engine like this before as it was out the box when I got it any advice would be very help full.

I have checked as much as I can without stripping i.It all looks brand new even though it is nearly 25 years old, could it just need running to loosen it up,it does smell funny when it gets warm, the engine was still sealed in it's box 'has been for the last 24 odd years'

many thanks for any help

as others have said it is hard to tell. You could have a rusted valve stem but I would think high RPMs would show problems if that is the case. The smell may just be the paint burning off. You might try adding some Marvels Mystery Oil to your gas for the first few tanks. I don't know how the carb was sealed while in the box but its been sitting a long time with no fuel and may have dried out gaskets and such. I would pull the fan shroud off and check the flywheel magnets to see if they have metal grit stuck to them. I had the same type of gritty feeling on a recovered 5 horse briggs and it was just peices of rust stuck to the flywheel magnets. Does it have the saftey brake on the flywheel? that would also cause stiffness and gritty feeling if it is not fully disengaged. I can't remember if the saftey brake was standard in '84. You might also try posting this question on the garden tractor forum.

I would check the flywheel for rust especially the magnets

For an almost 25 year old new engine, hard telling what might have rusted up from sitting around.
