I have just under 1/4 turn of play on the steering wheel. I don't have adjustment screws so I have to rotate the sector housings forward to tighten, according the service manual. No matter how many revolutions, I cannot get the play out. If I take the drag links off, I just feel a little play in the sector shafts. Why does the gasket have to rotate forward with the housings? This is how the manual states to tighten the steering but it is not working. Left side counterclockwise and rightside clockwise.
I decided to try to tighten them because turning the wheel to the right now is getting harder. Fluid is good. It seems to me according to the illustrated parts breakdown that rotating the housings would do nothing. Whats up folks?

The early style boxes had eccentric housings. that's why you could rotate them to try to snug up sector backlash.

Sounds like you have a compount problem.. bushings are worn.. so rotating the housing covers does nothing.. also.. if the steeirng is getting hard.. sounds like the top and or bottom thrust bearing has died from lack of lube.

With that many problems in 1 box.. i'd be tempted to get either a good condition late style box and install it.. or get a rebuilt or re-popped early style box.

I think you can get them inthe 400$ range.

Otherwise.. you wil be goin in for bushings and bearings.. and then hoping the sector and worm ar ok.. as they can be another few hundred buchs themselves.. etc..

they discontinued that gear box after a year or so the bearings on the shaft are gone get a diffrent one that has the outher adjustment screws on each side. take it off and take apart and see the problem.
