I have what I believe to be a 1987 Gilson Lawn Tractor and I need to find a new ignition for it but haven't got a clue as to where to look. I took the old one out but all it has on it is a patent#. I found one that looks like it might work but I don't want to purchase it and have something go wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look for one? Thanks!

The Gilsons Ive seen all had Briggs n Stratton engines. I can reinforce that Bob siad cuz even though Ive had coils thet I thought fit almost alllll lllll similar sized Briggs engines, when I go to the parts store they wont even talk to me UNLESS I have the Model and Serial Numbers which you ought to easily find as either stamped or a metal tag somewhere on the engine. Ive had small engines that wouldnt fire a lick but a simple clean up of the flywheel magnets and adjustign the air gap from coil to flywheel made em fire again. Look for things like the kill wire circuit off the ignition which maybe leads to the carb isnt shorted out.

if it is a BS engine go to briggs and strattion on the computer and they will tell you where to look for their numbers many are on the air schroud over tne flywheel it will decode to the modle and year serial no. also you can get part no.s and pictures the same place

Thanks John. Maybe I didn"t explain my situation correctly. I don"t know a lot about tractors but my problem is the ignition. When I got the tractor there was no key and someone was using a screwdriver to start it and it is now stripped out. I have attached a photo of what my tractor looks like. I will try to find the model/serial numbers for you as soon as possible.
Thanks again!

I had one EXACTLY like that buttttt tttt it had a weird combination push button start system NOT any turn key. When it stopped working (as they alllll l did) people jury rigged toggle or push switches etc. It wont do you any good to post me serial or model numbers, if the briggs portion of it needs repair a small engine or lawn mower dealer will have to help you. As far as that weird Gilson wiring, all you need is a normally open spring return SPST push type switch to energize the starter solenoid to start it and the kill switch is usually just a way to ground out the ignition to kill the spark. Its easy if there but its hard to tell you how to do this over the net. Get someone with a lil basic electricity understanding to help you. Piece of cake if the mowers in front of him BUT HARD to fix this over the net, sorry

Gilson didn't make the ENGINE, most likely Tecumseh or Briggs. You need to find the model and serial #'s on the engine, and post them. SOMEONE will likely recognize them.

A picture would be GREAT!

Tractor Supply farm stores have these switches.
Check after market parts catalogs, they list a lot of switches and other parts.

Sorry! I GUESSED you were looking for an ignition SYSTEM, BOX, COIL, or whatever, NOT simply the switch!

You have to be REAL careful when replacing a switch like that, because there are several types, and even though they look the same, they can function differently.

If the engine has "magneto" ignition, and a switch for "battery ignition" gets swapped in, the magneto coil will be destroyed, etc..

If you are still looking for a switch, you might try mfgsupply.com, or jackssmallengines.com.

I think you will find email or phone contact information on their sites.

If no help, good to www.perr.com, and register for the "technical Forum", and post your question there.
