I have a 5.5 hp. honda gas engine that I haven't started for about three years, I put in new gas, new spark plug but can't get it started. If I put gas in the carb--it runs for a couple seconds and stops again. It is an ohv design. Any ideas to get it going. thanks

Hi Mike,
Steven is right about the carb. The old gas has stopped up the jets, etc.
There is one thing you might try before you take the carb apart. Pour some carb cleaner in the gas tank with new gas and crank the motor with starter fluid or gas in the carb intake. As soon as the engine starts, see if you can keep it running by choking it either with the choke or by hand. If you can keep it running this way for a while, the carb cleaner in the gas may work enough to allow the engine to run normally without the choke. Worth a try. Good luck.

If it runs when you put gas in the carb I will assume that you would have compression and ignition. I would have to believe that the float is stuck in the carb, or the jets are plugged with varnish from sitting so long.

Disassemble the carb and make sure everything is clean and open and that the needle and seat and float all move freely.
