I have a NH 469 Haybine that works well. I need to take the cutting bar off and replace the knives. It looks like It unbolts near the wobble box, and then the entire thing comes out.

Could anyone tell ne exactly how to take the cutting bar off in order to replace the knives? And, is it easy to replace the knives themselves?
Thanks,
Dan Neunaber

Dan: I'm going back 20+ years here, so forgive the memory if it's a bit foggy, but I know that the knives are (or at least were!) individually replaceable. In the "good old days", they were held on by rivets, though I believe some newer styles bolted on. A rivet press was available--basically it's a double-ended C-clamp-type press, with one end used to press out the old rivets after the heads were ground off, and the other end used to upset and head the new rivets. Failing this, you can do it with a ball-peen hammer.

Thanks much! Do I pull the bar straight out the wobble box side? It looks like it should just slide out. I see that the bar is attached with a vertical bolt that goes down through a rounded piece on the cutting bar. Should I remove both the vertical bolt and the bolts for the rounded end of the cutting bar?

Also, I noticed that they sell new blades at Fleet farm here. Can the knives be individually replaced?
Thanks,
Dan Neunaber

On the NH 489 we have ,, and all other mowers I have been around , Always remove on the wobble box side ,, TAKE THE TIME TO PRESSURE WASH ALL DIRT AND GRASS OFF BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE ,,OIL WITH OLD USED ENGINE OIL ALL OVER CUTTING BAR AND TURN THE PTO ON TO WORK IT IN ,, GET YOU SOME GLOVES AND AN EXTRA CAREFUL HELPING HAND , BE CAREFUL WHILE REPLACEING ,, YOU CAN LOSE A FISTFUL OF FINGERS IF SOMEONE PULLS AT THE WRONG TIME ..,GOOD LUCK JIM

Take the bolt out of the bar where it connects to the wobble box and then pull it straight out the same side. It should move easily.

Knifes can be individually replaced as already noted. If the rubber bushing in the end of the bar is worn and needs replaced they cost under $20. However DO NOT beat it in. The bushing should be installed using a press. If not it will fail prematurely. (BTDT).

On my 469 I keep a spare bar on the back of the haybine. A complete replacement bar was $125 at the NH dealer when I checked last just a few weeks ago (although I found one at TSC for $95).
Since I bought a second bar I've not had any problems... Murphy's law I guess.
