I have what I beleive to be a 1957 Fordson Dexta
tractor with a 3 cylinder Perkins deisal engine. nothing electronic but the starter,(no glow plugs) it runs off compression . I had it running for a couple years , but starter seemed to get weak and wouldn't start the tractor anymore. head it rebuilt , but still wont start . Is there a compression releif valve for this thing that Im missing ?? what should I do do with this thing . Iwas told buy the guy who repaired the starter that there was only 500 of these tractors ever made.

They made something like over a 100000dextas,most with the 3 cyl.perkins,so it isn't all that rare! These engines do not have a decompression valve,it should start.does it crank fast enough? is there fuel at the injectors? exhaustsmoke while cranking? check and clean all electrical connections. What do you mean "it runs off compression"?

Hello, I live in Holland and have a 1961 Dexta, which has a glowplug in the intake manifold, and a little pump under the dieseltank. To start it, you have to push the pump once, to spray some diesel into the intakemanifold and then glow for about a minute and then turn the starter, works fine.

this tractor has NO glow plugs what so ever , NO wires of any kind ,except for starter . has NO place on manifold for a glow plug . It turns over realgood for a second or 2 then dies down to nothing. even with fresh battery , and booster cables. just had the starter rebuilt.

Be sure that the battery has all its CCA's at home before you do anything. CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) are more important than AH (Amp Hours) when starting a diesel engine. (don't try an ordinary car battery - just won't do)
I've replaced my battery with one from a VW 5cyl. diesel Transporter - WOW!

That rebuilt starter is a warranty claim job.
The symptom says starter FUBAR.

i have a 64 Dexta with perkins engine myself.wonderful tractors...have you tried to pull start it???you would have to use 2nd or 3rd gear & high range.if it started then you would know if starter was problem.i have had starters rebuilt before that were no better than they were to start with.if starter has been very hot the varnish will melt shorting the armature or fields resulting in a very weak starter(runs fine till you load em)...also if the bushings were not replaced they could be worn letting armature drag on field shoes...have seen many starters called rebuilt that were just patch jobs...BTW all diesels run on compression & the injector pump injects fuel in time like a distributor does with spark...

That's right!but it only needs that when it's below 10 degrees or so(that's around40fahrenheit).this time of year it should just crank and go.
