Engine not running properly

I noted a couple years ago that the manifold was getting rusty and last year I picked up a new manifold and replace it. I removed the carburetor when I did this. After putting everything back together, I had difficulty getting it to start. The first time it started up the engine raced at high RPM’s so I shut it down right away. After reading a bit, I thought that I had “governor throttle shaft” out of sync with the throttle! I made the adjustments and believe that problem is taken care of. (maybe)

So I’m able to start the engine now, but only runs at idle rpm’sfor about 30 seconds, it shuts down.

I’m not sure if I have the throttle shaft set correctly or if I have a problem with the fuel float, or something else.

I’m open for suggestions, also am looking for someone in Western Pennsylvania that might be interested in coming and taking a look at it.

I found 2 wierd problems like this.

1. There was some foam near the throat of the carb. that was being sucked into the passage cutting the engine off.

2. I closed the gas shut off directly under the gas tank to do some work and the tractor would not run long after I started it. Also the engine was slightly under powered for years. I found that over years find dust had steeled in the shut off valve, I cleaned it good and it runs like new.

Thanks all. I'll try lining up the gov. again. It's at a tough angle to see if I'm hitin' the slot right.

On another note, when it comes to the fuel bowl and float. In my "M" manual it shows the fuel height in the bowl, but I'm confused about the bowl. The way it looks to me is the bowl is the entire lower part of the carb. and the float sits in there? I'm thinking that's wrong because when you opened the choke, all the fuel would run out? Set me straight here please!
thanks
Thane

I'm thinkin it sounds like throttle, governor. I'd be able to figure it out if I looked at it, but I'm in eastern PA, Not western. Your best bet is to post on the farmall IHC discussion board. Doug N

Those govanor to carb shafts can be hard to get lined up just right. But if it ran good before you took it apart its most likely that you don't have the little slot lined up like it needs to be. If put in one way it will race and if put in another it will idle to low. You need it in the little slot which as I said can be hard to get just right. I would say take it off again and try to line it up again. BTDT
