I have been getting some interest in how I modified my Allis B steering. I had some pics on Yahoo and referenced them but that site is no longer. I have added some pics on this site under tractor photos. Jim Powers-Mo. 1941 Allis B. You can see them there. It was a fairly simple modification and as you can see from the photos the box itself is hard to distinguish from the original. I changed out my steering wheel as well as the shaft was badly worn and I didn't like the height of it either. I used a steering box from a 1989-90 Ford Ranger pick up and a steering wheel with short shaft and universals from about the same year Toyota pick up. That made mating up the box to the shaft easier but could have used the original. Just be sure to get the box with its own flex collar and pitman shaft. You will modify the pitman shaft by cutting off the lower length and welding on the Allis B pitman arm at about the same place where you removed the Allis pitman arm spline as they are different. You can see that in the photos for clarity. I had to fashion new brackets to fit the new box on or rather in the old position and used the original drilled holes and bolts on the torque tube, and installed the new box up side down in order to orient the pitman shaft to the left side same as the B original. The box will also have to be oriented so that it mates up at the right angle to the steering shaft. Just install the shaft first and you can dry fit everything before you make up the mounting brackets. I fashioned my brackets from 1"X 3/16 flat steel. It will require some trial and error and some heating and bending and of course some welding to mate this up but I did the whole installation in a day. I also had to remove the Ford adjustment screw back to the lock nut( just saw it off with a hack saw) so that it could be positioned to clear the starter and the tank/tool box shroud. I also added an additional mounting support to the top right of the new box extending it forward to the bell housing to prevent twisting of the new box. This made the whole setup stable and the new box (use one that comes from a vehicle without power steering!) with its better ratios makes the tractor steer like it had power. I could have rebuilt the steering shaft of the original and reused it . I am not intending to show the tractor so I wasn't fussy there. The new shaft has much better bearing support and looks just fine to me. It is a work tractor and it does that very well every time I start her up. Hope this helps some of you out with loose steering problems. Send me an email if you have further questions. I tried to explain the conversion as well as I could but things may still be unclear. Jim
