I'll bet the stud at the starter turned a bit when you changed the cable, causing a "short".

If it's got the OEM-style starter switch (saddle mount, perched atop the starter) and the stud on the switch has turned, the fix is to replace the switch. Figure $10 - $15 for the switch and 5 minutes to swap it out.

However if the starter switch is remotely located and connected to the starter with a battery cable, and the cable terminal has turned in the starter, the starter will need to go to a starter shop for repair.
