I have a 48 Farmall Cub that has a serious oil leak. Very quickly after the engine is started Oil will begin to drip heavily from around the rear of the oil pan (however its not the pan thats leaking). Oil will also drip through the access inspection port underneath the tractor. I'm guessing its a real oil seal?? Any other suggestions or comments?

If I remember correctly the oil pump is under the flywheel on the cub. Might check that while you are in there as well. It could be the source of your leak.

It sounds very much like a rear main seal problem. It is pretty straightforward to pull the engine and replace the seal. You may find that the seal is loose in the seal housing. I had to center punch all around the seal housing and use sealer around the outside of the seal. It has been working fine for about 10 years now. Be sure your crankcase vent in the oil cap is clear or blowby will pressurize the crankcase, causing seal leakage or blowing the seal out of the housing.

I have a 1948 Cub that is leaking in the back of the oil pan by the flywheel. It is a slow leak and I don't see it coming from the oil pan. I initially replaced the oil pan gasket and the leak is still there. It could be a rear main seal problem. Have just recently bought a shop manual to learn how to separate the tractor and get this fixed. Are there any tips or suggestions about repairing this?

Thanks.
