AC WD charging

I've got a '51 WD that overcharges the battery. It has the original generator with a cut-out and a 6 volt battery. The ammeter reads between 18 and 19 amps when it's running and zero when it's not. The light switch was disconnected when I got it and I found out a resistor in the switch is part of the charging system. I put a new switch in and there was no change in the amps. It reads 18-19 regardless of the position of the switch. Any suggestions?

KM Are you sure the new switch is the correct one and is it wired correct?? The gennys Field terminal is supposed to wire to it and in the Low Charge (on the correct switch terminal) theres around 2 to 3 ohms of resistance from it to ground for the gennys field circuit but in High Charge its dead grounded. Sounds like your gennys field is somehow permanently dead grounded perhaps a wiring short or its miswired up to that switch??? If its disconnected (wire on gennys Field post) the charge rate ought to drop drastically. Once you get the correct field resistance for the Low charge if shes still too much adjust the gennys third brush for less charge. Sure the battery is okay???? if bad or theres some other wiring short she could be drawign excess amps.

Sounds like the field is grounded. Remove the f wire from the gen and see if charge drops to 0.. if so. good.. now recheck wiring from the lamp switch.. the lamp switch / ressitor combo setup is suposed to provide minimal charge with no lamps, and then tickle the field some more with lamps on. That's the way it is on my G..

KM, if your tractor has a three brush generator, you need to move the field brush away from the hot brush until the charge rate is acceptable to you. Usually a screw on the rear plate unlocks the brush assy so you can rotate it to set the charge rate.

Thanks! I'll double check the wiring first. If it checks out OK I'll look at adjusting the field.
