New to the antique tractor world and am currently going about getting my first JD going after winter. She's a 1941 model A which was my Dads, I bought at our own auction last year. Couldn't stand to see all of his old girls go and held on to one of his favorites! Now! My question dumb as it may seem to you experianced guys out there is how the heck do you check the oil level in the engine? Know where to add it but there's no dip stick, and I take it, it's got to be the old high/low plug thing, right? Only which ones are the right plugs to check? There's the two right behind the flywheel, facing towards the back of the tractor and then there's one I found in the block, underneath the flywheel. Plan on buying a manual soon but just want to hear the old girl run again to.

On my model A, there is a petcock type unit under the flywheel. It looks like a large hex fitting with a bolt threaded into it. To check the level, you crack the bolt, and the oil will flow through a hole in the hex fitting. The plug under the pulley may be the same level. I've always used the fitting uder the flywheel. I had to have my dad show me when we first got the tractor. Hope this helps.

Thank's ghostrider and joe for the tips on my A. Now have two differant locations to check out both on opposite sides of tractor, but oh well? Think I've found the anser to my question and ghostrider wins. Sorry joe but just as g.rider said the petcock for checking oil level in my JD. model A is on the flywheel side underneath the flywheel itself.

That would be on the pully side under neith it.
there will be a bolt that sticks out. take out the outer bolt and pour in oil till it drips out.
