Hi Folks,
I just found and picked up an old wagon that needs some TLC. Everything is solid except the wood sides and floor. Just need to replace the wood and run some lights. Just wondering what kind of wood I should use foor the floor and walls. I have access to oak, pine, and I believe spruce. I was thinking to just buy 3/4" pine tongue and groove from our equivelant to HD but don't know if it is tough enough. I also have plenty of 3/4" exterior plywood. Seems like I read somewhere to stay away from the oak. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, what would be a good paint for the wood? I plan to paint it to match my IHC tractor.

Thanks,

Dave

Pine is a good choice if you are going to paint it.....also if it will be used mostly for show. Oak and other hardwoods are stronger but will not hold paint as well. Pine tongue and groove would be ideal for a show/parade wagon.

I'd go to a sawmill, out on the country, and buy some wood from them. They should have wooden planks, in the rough, and the stringers you'll need to build the wagon box.

Thanks everyone. Guess I should have mentioned that I'd be using it for firewood, hay, a little manure and dirt hauling. I'll look for the yellow pine, but in the worst case will use the T&G pine and a rubber stall matt on top when hauling the nasty stuff. Can't look any worse than it does now.

Thanks again.

Seems it's going to depend a lot on what is locally available. In my area of central New York, hickory was always the wood of choice for floors on wagons and trailer-beds. It wears like iron and is fairly rot resistant. Next best wood is white oak - it is tough and very rot resistant - unlike red oak. Next to that, many local farmers use hemlock, mainly because it's cheap and plentiful. Medium strength and fairly rot resistant. Hemlock is also used a lot for floors in horse-barns when sawed 2" or 3" thick. Pine is never used around here for floors - at least not white or red pine. Yellow pine yes - but it's not a local product and thus it's expensive.

Our farm wagons all had home made beds. My dad used T&G pine for sides and floor. The floor was treated, 2X8'. The sides were 1" tongue and groove "Car siding" At least that is what I remember it being called. not sure if you can still get the stuff. It was about a 1X8, that had a groove in the middle..The sides were untreated. He had a neighbor with a sawmill cut oat for the stakes on he side. Hope this helps.
