steering wheel question

Hi folks, another question if you don't mind. Is there a secret to keeping the black from an old steering wheel from coming off on your hands everytime it's wet? Could it be just 40+ years of greasy hands, or does the plastic just wear off? Is there something that will bring it back to life, or do I just wash it as best as possible and wear gloves?

Thanks again, Dave

The old rubber breaks down.

Clean it real good with a pot scrubby. then let it dry.. then paint it with a matt finish or semi-gloss.. let it cure.. Could also seal it with a clear coat.. then allow to fully cure.

Thank You! Would it make sense just to Armorall it or use one of the gajillion rubber products? Or just paint it and call it done?

Thanks again

I think it will still give ya 'blackhand' even with the snake oil.. and then it will be THAT much harder to paint after all that oily one containing product is on there..

I painted mine and have never regretted it.
