I have a 1961 Ford 601 Workmaster and it once the tractor is started it will sometimes take 20 minutes or more before the hydraulics will begin working. Once they start working there are no problems. What is it that needs servicing to correct this issue?

Don,Here is something to try.Drain the hydraulic oil out of the tractor. Then put pure deisel fuel back in its place.Start the tractor up and bleed the pump.It has a plug on the front of it toward the top side.Loosen it up until air and fluid start driping out. When nothing but fluid is coming out retighten it.Then operate the lift with the deisel fuel in it until the system is good and warm. Then if everything is working good drain it again and replace it with the correct hydraulic oil."DO NOT PUT 90 WT.GEAR OIL IN THE LIFT RESEVOIR".I've had many old tractors come into my shop with the lifts working slow or not at all and i performed the procedure i have described to you and they started working fine again. Also there is no reason to be scared of using the fuel to operate the system. It has enough lubrication value to operate the system without causing damage to the seals and bearings for a short time. However I would not recommend driving the tractor with it installed. You can have an implement such as a plow or brushog attached while you operate the lift if you wish. This will help to warm the system up quicker as you operate it up and down. What you will be doing is flushing the dirt and moisture out of the hydraulic system with the deisel.Someone may have gear lube installed in the resevoir and it has to warm up and thin down before the pump can push it with enough pressure to operate the lift.If this does not help you may have to replace the o-rings and seals in the system or rebuild the pump to restore the system.Your oil will need to be replaced anyway so if the flush does'nt work all you will lose is the deisel fuel.

You'd have gotten more responses, and faster by actually posting this on the FORD board.

in any case.. that unit should have the piston pump. My guess is it is loosing prime due to a bad oring on the manifold / pickup tube side.

While you can pull the plug and burp it.. to get it going immediatly.. the real fix is replacing the orings on the manifolds.

Running it with no oil is a tad brutal and wearing it out prematurely..

There are other places it could be getting a leak.. but those usually show up with an oil accumulation in one sump, and a loss in another.. etc.
