I Just removed the plate at the front of the M where the worm gear is for the steering and it looks like it is packed with Grease. The manual says it is to be filled with 1 quart of "oil". Does anyone know what is supposed to be in there or is wheel bearing grease the accepted fluid of choice? Weight of oil if oil is used? Is this also where you pull the steering shaft from to R/R the radiator for pressure testing and leak fix. Thanks Skip

You can use a a heavy gear oil if you wish. But since the seals are likely the originals and the bushing worn, it will leak. You can replace the two seals if you wish, but I know from experience that the seal for the vertical shaft is a real bear to replace! I replaced one on my H, but I must have not got the new one driven in quite right or damaged it while installing it because it still leaked. So I just packed it full of grease, problem solved :-)

it takes 90 wt gear lube. if its got gun grease in it, the seal on the bottom of the upper gearcase housing leaks, and who ever had it used grease. pretty common. more than likeley the bushings in the bolster are worn, causing the leak. to remove the steering shaft to get the radiator out, unscrew the pipe plug in the upper bolster, drive the roll pin out of the steering shaft up near the gauges, and unscrew the shaft out of the housing. it comes out the front where the cap is. if you want to rebuild the bolster, carter and gruenwald has an overhaul kit, bearings, bushings and seals for about 150.00.
