I am trying to find some info on my WD. Last time I ran the tractor everything worked fine. Started it up the other day and it won't move. Checked the fluid's and the trans. was a light creamy brown color. So, I drained it out and was going to replace it. My book say's 17 quarts, but doesn't say what type fluid to use.I know it is syncro-mesh trans. It feels like hydraulic fluid but smells like gear oil.Does anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Don't know what book you're looking at, but lube recommendations are in the Operator manual. 17 quarts of SAE 80EP, all year, for the transmission, differential, and transmission clutch. Hydraulic system uses SAE 20W, above 45 degrees F, SAE 10W below that. Transmission is not a synchro-mesh. It is a 'constant mesh'. No synchronizers back in those days.

Late WD's had the same syncro tranny that the WD-45's had, easily identifiable by a curved shifter. The older style tranny had a straight one.

No WD or WD45 had a synchro tranny. Early WD had a straight-cut gear transmission, just like all other previous AC tractors. Late '52 (WD serial # 127008) they went to the angle-cut gears, with the curved shift lever, and continued that through the WD45 model.

The tranny with the curved shifter is commonlly called the "Synchro-Mesh" transmission, It is probably just a snazzy term coined by A-C to sell tractors but that is what they called them. It may not be technecally "syncronized" but it is alot closer to it than the tranny they put in WD"s with straight shifters.

It looks like the boys got to arguring, over the tranny and forgot to answer your question. EP stands for extreme pressure. I had water in my wd45 tranny when I first got it, and ordered a new shifter boot, to cure the problem. I have been using 80-90 conoco, in the tranny, since flushing it with diesel, 5 yrs ago, and no new water, and you surely know how much it rains in western washington

Allis called it a "Helical Gear" transmission not a "Synchro-Mesh" transmission. Just to clear things up.

My Allis Chammers book states to use SAE 80 Ep for transamision as stated in your recent reply . Problem went to TSC and tried to find it and they only carrier SAE80W90. What does the EP mean? or what should I use?

Thank you JMS. The book I have is I&T shop service, very limited on info but cover's about 10 different AC models. Just kinda of general fix it items. Like I say not real informative. Once again I thank you for your time and info. Mike

You're welcome. Bottom line is this: anyone who buys a tractor- the first book to buy is the Operator manual. Most basic of all- used to come with the tractor, but are still available. Identifies the controls, specifies the lubes, how many quarts to refill various compartments, etc. Where drain and fill plugs are. Service manual tells you how to tear it down and repair it. Parts manual ID's the parts, by number, shows exploded views as to how everything fits together. I've been posting on this board for years, and what really ticks me off is when someone says he inherited a tractor and wants to know how much oil he needs to refill a crankcase or rear end- and I get criticized when I tell him to buy the OP manual...what?.. $20- when he got the tractor for free? I have 14 hobby tractors, and paid for every one of them, and their op, service, and parts manuals. I'm glad you have the service manual for yours- parts manuals are not all that necessary, but the op manual is always the first one to buy. Best of luck with your tractor- very popular model, and a good one to have, like so many other brands. Orange, Red, Green, Gray, and all the others from years ago that built this country.
