I would like to know if anyone can tell me where I should be running my wires for a ammeter being installed on my 404 utility tractor. It is a 12 volt system, and has a 12 volt generator on it. I know that the system is charging, but I want to wire in my new ammeter gauge, to monitor the system. The tractor is a 1968 model.

Thank You
Brian

The Supply side ammeter terminal typically has only one connection, thats the hot ungrounded battery voltage feed often connected to the big battery cable conenction where it attaches to a starter switch or starter solenoid input (NOT the output starter side)

Then the ammeters other Load side terminal has 2 wires, one wires to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator and the other wires to the BAT input terminal to supply voltage to loads like lights n ignition switches when they are switched on.

Supply side to battery/starter, load side to BAT terminal on VR PLUS feed to hot battery voltage to switches BAT input terminals

If its wired the correct polarity if you turn on lights or ignition engine NOT running it should swing over to - discharge and then when runnign if alls well it should indicate charge over to +. if it does just backwards of this, simply reverse/swap leads side to side.

Thank You John:

Here is what I have going on right now. From one side of the ammeter gauge, I have a wire going to the positive post on the battery. On the other side of the ammeter gauge I have a wire going to the on side of the switch. Now what I have discovered is that I have a switch that is hot all the time. So I disconnected the wire off of the switch again.

The supply side is correct, the wire to the battery post, but the other load side has to go the the switches BAT INPUT NOT its output (to lights etc) otherwise they are ALWAYS on. The load side ALSO connects to the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator so the gennys output can get to n charge the hot battery post via the ammeter. Dont think theres much else I can describe for ya,,,,, ,,
