I am about to take possession of an Oliver 550 tractor that I am planning to restore. I don't have the numbers yet so I can't tell what year it was made but I know where to get them. The question I have is, and I know it is a very general question, but where do I start with the restoration project? How can I tell whether the tractor is even good enough shape to do the restoration, although it has been sitting for a number of years in the dry Arizona air, and it ran when they parked it there, how can I tell whether it is worth the effort to restore? Once that is determined, where does one get started? Any input would be greatly appreciated

Regards,
Duke

Well let me first start out I hate the term restore. The reason is to truely restore a tractor you need to take it apart, all the way and repair/replace every part that is not with in factory spec. As in restore it to what it was when new. Now if you say fix up thats differant becuase you are fixing it to use or show off. Almost any tractor that is complete can be fixed up and mad to look good all depends on how much you want to do and how much $$ you want to put into it. I have brought more then one back to life that would have been cut up fro scrap iron

everybody will have different methods and ideas on their restoration projects. decide what you want first. full blown, 100 point restoration, nice quality restoration, or a rebuild, repaint and get er up and working again. if the motor isnt toast and you can get er running (even if its smokes some) i like to at the very least get the tractor started, get it moving and start making a list of things you find wrong, ie oil leaks, bad clutch, howling rear end ect. that gives you a direction to get started on. if, say the rear end is shot, trans gears broke, cracked housing ect, you may want a donor tractor for parts. when you got your list together, start and one end of the tractor and work your way to the other.
