The problem comes from people going crazy and putting so much sealant on that the excess sealant gets squeezed into the system as you close the component up. It can cause sticking valves, stopped up strainers and some weird problems. Have used it many times on hydrualic components. The trick is to have a clean, dry well prepared surface and then you only put a very small amount on the mating surfaces. I usually put it more towards the out side of the joint then spread it very thinly and make sure there is some room for it to squeeze on the surface and still not go into the component. The only sealing is done by the microscopic amount that goes in to the small pores or uneven spots or scratches of the mating surface. The wads of sealer you see on components repaired with dingle berries of sealant hanging on the outside have all been overdosed and the excess is just wasted and looks like c#$%. When you finish closing the component up, take a rag wet with solvent and wipe the excess sealer off the outer surface for a neat professional look and you have also save a penny or two from not wasting the sealer. DISCLAIMER**** This is how I have done it for many years, but your mileage and results may vary!!!!!
