A machinist told me there is a process called acid dating in which a filed off serial number on an engine block, or other metal, can be retreived. Can someone give me some info on this?
Thanks

Would this work on an aluminum tag that was sandblasted??

As long as the numbers were pressed in.

The Law Enforcement agencies can do that on guns that have #'s filed away, so I assume it would work on an engine block.

This only works on stamped steel like guns and items with press stamped numbers. This does not work on items with cast or raised letters. Anyone that tells you it can has been watching too much CSI.

Can"t answer authoritatively, but can say can be done under certain circumstances---never looked it up but assume has to do with stress of stamping numbers or letters into metal affecting the metal below the visible impressions. Would guess--repeat, guess--would work best where not much underlying metal could be removed...
