Because of a stupid mistake on my part I think I sheared a pin or key in the timing gears that drive the hydraulic pump on my Farmall M. I ran the tractor with the return line blocked and it stalled and I haven't been able to get it started since. It wont even pop. The distributor shaft turns, but I suspect it is way out of time. Is there a shear pin or key I can check? Thanks, Matt

Thanks for the tips guys. I tried both tests and everything seems to be fine. I am starting to believe I may have a fuel problem. I guess its time to start running some tests on that system. Matt

matt, if you have a live pump on your m, mounts between distributor and engine, could be that the camshaft gear let go. here is a quick down and dirty test. find #1 spark plug, note position it goes on distributor (or mag). mark body of distributor with piece of masking tape, marker, paint, whatever. remove distributor cap, remove #1 spark plug. stick your finger in spark plug hole and crank engine over. when the rotor in the distributor comes around to the #1 mark, you should feel compression push your finger out of the plug hole. it should do that consistently on each compression stroke. if not, there is a problem in the gear drives.

I agree! Sounds like the cam gear has failed - not unusual with a live pump installed.

Here's a quicker test for proper timing:

Turn the crank until the TDC notch on the crank pulley aligns with the pointer on the front cover.

Now remove the distributor cap and note the position of the rotor.

If the distributor (and hence camshaft...) is in time the rotor arm will be directly below either the #1 or #4 cap nipple.

The rotor pointing anywhere else is a sure sign of problems.
