just replaced the head gasket on a john deere model 60 that had been sitting for about 3 years not running. I had the valves ground and seated. The tappet gaps are set to spec. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, coil, and condenser. The points and plugs are also set to spec. I took the carb apart and cleaned it and reassembled it. The timing is set to 5 degrees after tdc. The tractor is very hard to start. But sometimes it will just pop right off and start running. When it does run it will only go for about 20 secs or so and then it dies. Then it takes a few minutes to get it started again. And it dies again. The fuel bowl is clean and the filter is clean. I dont know how much gas should be in the carburator or exactly where the mixture screws or the load screw should be set. It sounds like its not getting enough gas but I dont know what else to do. And help or advice would be most welcome here as I have been working on this problem for a few months on and off. Any help would me appreciated. Thanks

Not only do you need a good supply of gas to the carb you need a good air flow also. Id check the breather tube and filter. No telling what moved in and set up houskeeping in those 3 years it sat up.

good luck

It may be lack of fuel in the carb. There also is a low oil pressure shut-off built into the sediment bowl filter. If engine oil pressure isn't present, fuel won't flow. I think there is an over-ride to allow the carb to fill without the engine running. You need to be sure there is a good flow of fuel to the carb. I'm not too sure on these later two-cylinder tractors, so post on the John Deere forum and you'll get better advise as to initial carb settings, etc.

Did you put the head gasket on correctly?? Was the head and block surfaces VERY CLEAN? They need to be clean, smooth and shiney for the gasket to seal. You might be getting antifreeze in the cylinders making it hard to start. Also make sure the head and block are not cracked and do not leak. Be sure your carburetor adjustment is set.

Sounds like you may have a bad condenser. It doesn't take very long for a condenser to heat up and stop working and that will keep it from running. Could also be a weak ignition switch but more likely the condenser
