i have a 1940 farmall h that i bought about 7 months ago. i went out to start it 2 weeks ago and the starter won't turn the engine over. i took the starter out and hit the button and it turns fine.any ideas of what could be causing this? thanks for any help.
(p.s when i bought it it had new rings and a rebuilt head put on it.)

If the starter wants to turn but not "fast enough to turn the engine overthen, chances are the starter needs a rebuild or replacemnent". I would also look into the starter "hole" and see if you see where it's might be possibley hanging up on something. I would remove the starter, then tow the machine around and attempt to "Pop the clutch" if the engine is free, then the starter should be checked by a competent electrical motor company, I had bad luck with NAPA.

Those starters have a habit of not disengaging from the flywheel once and a while. Maybe it was stuck?
I'd put it back in, make sure all the connections are clean, tight and bright, and see if it works now.
When a starter sticks, you can often free it by loosening the bolts about halfway, wiggle the starter around some, then bolt it back up.
Hope that helps.

Can you turn the engine by hand?
You may want to ask about this over on the Farmall/IH board. Some of the guys on there are really good with H's.
