I need to have exhaust valve seats installed in the Hercules engine block. Some years ago someone told me there were portable machines to cut the block for new seats. But 3 machine shops are telling me I need to strip the block so it will fit in their cutting machine. I'd sure like to avoid pulling everything out of the block. Anybody had this done or have any suggestions?
thanks Bert

George, Don't order anything for me yet. But, if you do find a source for valves I'd like to know that. I've found a machine shop here in Richmond called Ballos Precision Machine that thinks they can fix it. They want to look at the engine. I started taking the sheet metal off tonite and will try to get the engine out to them next week.
Gotta tell you I'm kinda nervous about somebody messing up this block. I'll try to understand what they plan to do before proceeding..
Thanks Bert

The little Hercules engine your L has can easily be done with a hand-powered seat cutter often used for small engines. I've got a Nu-Way carbide cutter kit originally sold to do valve seats on Kohler, Briggs, Wisconsin, etc. Works great on the little Hercules.

And, if you can't borrow the kit somewhere - don't you have any friends with a electric-driven Sioux seat-grinder? Very portable and easy to use.

I once bought an L with a LUC engine and it was apart as previous owner said it needed a valve seat and he was up against same problem as you. Well I bought it and had it up and running in no time. Just ground the valves until they cleaned up and then used another stone to narrow the seats and it was a little low this low spped low compression engine didn't notice. It got it up and running.

So are they really that bad ? try grinding them and see where your at.

Bert,

The shops you went to are too modern, you need to find an old time machine shop or an old corner garage that did his own engine work.

I have three of the portable valve seat cutter sets, 2 manual and one with power, also have the new system that might do that little block. The portables are Souix and KO lee,the powered portable is Hall-Toledo. The Hall was built in 1941 ,but hall is still building portable seat machines and many of the parts of the new ones fit mine.

George, Thanks for letting me know that portables do indeed exist. Now the question is, are there any old machine shops or old corner garages left?? And how to find one??
Do the portables (hand operated?) cut acccurate enough to get the right fit? Where are you located: I'm in Richmond Va.
Thanks Bert

Bert, Yes the manual powered ones are accurate, they bolt on the block and use a pilot in the guide to center the same way a seat grinder does. The manual ones are in preset sizes ,the Hall is adjustable and is set with a micrometer . The adjustment allows you to install oversize seats ( .005,.010,.020,etc) and also control the amount of press fit .

I north of you , in md and on the pa line. And not real far off 95. If all else fails, bring it up and I'll do it for you , normally only takes little while.I need to check to see if I have the right size seat insert.

George, thanks for the info and offer to help me. I know nothing about valve seat sizes. How do you determine what size seat to use? Do you know what size valve is in the Hercules NXB and do you know of a source for new valves? thanks Bert
