You can have enough trouble with a new head gasket. Why would any one want to knowingly ask for trouble?

jerry what kind of engine are you working on, you may get by with this on a low compression tractor engine, but if your working on say a chevy v-8 it wont work, a head gasket is desgined to have a certain amount of " crush" when it is torqued down to make it seal, once it is tightened to the specs it will not "crush" again, some folks have had luck with using coppercoat on old engines with low compression like hand start antique tractors however,

Copper Kote gasket spray, or a couple of coats of simple 'ol aluminum spray paint.

Misunderstanding in reply to Bob, 01-12-2008 12:25:03
There is a lot of misunderstanding of the reason for using aluminum paint on head gaskets.

The using of aluminum paint on head gaskets is not used as a sealer. Aluminum paint is used to keep the gasket from sticking to the head or block so it can be reused. That practice started back before my time. I never intend to reuse head gaskets although I have a coupla times.

The only gaskets that I have used a dope on is the metal clad gaskets in over 50 years. Dope is not needed on fiber gaskets. It does not hurt a thing, use it if it makes you feel better but it will not help and is not needed.

Where's the missunderstanding? Aluminum paint DOES help metal headgaskets to seal, especially to avoid having coolant "weep" out between the head and gasket, or gasket and block.

Misinformation plain and simple.

Like I said if it makes you feel good using it use it. It sure won't hurt anything and when you remove the head the gasket it won't be stuck fast. Like using anti seize.
