Farmall B 1944

I have a Farmall B (1944 Model) that cranks every time you hit the starter. Is full of gasoline but won't run over 10-15 minutes until it chokes down. I've tried pushing the choke in and out to adjust it but can't get it to run continuously. I've had it in the shop since I got it from my father's estate for a year or so and the mechanic got it running. I hate to take it back to the guy isn't this just a small adjustment somewhere? Are they supposed to run with the choke out all the time? I am not very mechanical so the more detailed your answer the more help it will be. I appreciate any assistance!

Re: Won't idle after 10-15 minutes- VACUUM LEAK in reply to Farmall B 1944, 01-27-2008 16:30:50
I had the similar problem, finally tracked it to a vacuum leak at the carb base. Heat opens it up. Here's the test- fire that beast up and spray carb cleaner around the carb base...if the idle raises, bingo! you've got a vacuum leak that's leaning the engine out when it's hot and that's why she runs with the choke out.
here's the fix- get some sand paper and lay it on a pane of glass or something known to be super flat, and sand the base of the carb. Do this to any phenolic spacers or other stuff between the carb and manifold. double gasket it, and bolt it back together. COULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM!

if all else checks out unscrew sediment bowl from tank, take off glass use air hose and blow out. had a tractor one time that looked like some lad had dropped in a bb.

it sounds like fuel. check the carb it has a internal jet that that not removeable, it could be blocked not letting the right amount fuel to be used.

Thank you to all who replied. I'll give your suggestions a try. I added the picture to the photo gallery if you want to take a peek. I am unloading the tractor with my Massey 165. I use it for moving my round bales around my small place. I would like to get the B running smooth for kid's hayrides and conversation. I've had the B about 2 years. I left it with the best vintage tractor guy in the area and he let it sit. I really don't want to take it back. He's good but doesn't get in a hurry. I just converted the starter over to an electric key start. I am discouraged a little but this website seems to show other tractors of this age that run fine. I hope I am not chasing my tail on this project only to have continuous trouble.
Thanks again!

When it quits, pull the wire out of the center of the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and try a start. You hould see a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. If you don"t you points are bad, improperly set, corroded or burned, you have bad wiring, a bad key switch, a bad coil, bad connection, bad condensor, etc. WITH THE POINTS CLOSED, you should measure near battery voltage at the battery side of the coil and near zero etc.on the distributor side. If you have a 12v system, make sure that you have a true 12V coil OR you have a 6 volt coil with a 1.5 ohm resistor in series with the coil. You have to limit the current through the coil to ~4amps or it will overheat.

If you have a good spark (FAT & BLUISH-WHITE), then the problem may be fuel delivery. Clogged vent, clogged filter(s), kinked fuel line, stuck float, dirty carb, etc.

You probably have restricted fuel flow somewhere, anywhere from the tank outlet to inside the carb. The choke will do no good for an electrical problem. The problem can be in the tank outlet, the sediment bowl, the fuel line, the screen inside the fitting on the carb that the line screws into, or the carb could need cleaning and a kit put in it. Take the line loose at the carb an turn on the fuel, you should get a pencil sized constant stream of fuel. If so the problem is in the carb. If not it is one of the problems listed above.

You may have a bad ignition coil, if you have a distributor, feel the coil to see if it is hot when the engine stops. Another thing is the condenser may be bad. Try the coil and condenser, if that won't fix it, the carburetor may need to be rebuilt or adjusted. The ONLY time you use the choke is to start the engine and a little while after that, then you turn off the choke.

Good luck.

Andy.
