A 140 should have a voltage regulator so the light switch shouldn't affect charging like it does on older tractors.
Unless your tractor was changed, it should be positive ground, if you hooked it up backwards, it won't charge and might have damaged the voltage regulator. Your voltage regulator may have markings on the bottom to tell you whether it is for positive or negative ground. Make sure that the regulator base is connected to a good ground.
When you have the battery hooked up right, take a small jumper wire from the field terminal of the generator to a good ground while the tractor is running about half speed. If it starts to charge, you probably need a regulator, if it doesn't, the problem is probably in the generator.
