They make a product called "Icing", should be available at your local automotive paint store. Works great to fill pits and is easy to work with.

For Those With Dime Store in reply to oldiron29, 02-02-2008 16:54:17
For those like me with a dime store pocket book with a rich mans dreams. Butch(OH)on another board told that he had used Bondo mixed with fiberglass resin as a thinner mixed with the Bondo hardener to fill pitted metal. Last summer I used this mixture on two different projects. I mixed it twice as thin as plain Bondo. It takes longer to set up than just Bondo which gives you more time to work with it. It bonds to the metal much tighter than plain Bondo. It takes more work sanding than plain Bondo. I put some on a piece of scrap 22 gage metal and flexed it and it did not crack at about 1/32 thick. I will never run with the big dogs but am not going to set and do nothing because of a lack of money.

You think you feel old? Heck, I'm not even into my 20's, and I KNOW i've got a tube of that stuff beside my basement workbench! Gah! In my defense, I've since graduated to fibreglas and Bondo, but we bought that spot glazing putty from CanadianTire when we had to get one or two more safety inspections out of our old Cavalier.

Yes , all the major mfgrs. make it under one name or the other. The filler powder in it is a lot finer than regular fillers. It will work a lot better for pits and for filling scratches and small imperfections. Will not "pull out" of the pits when you squegee over it. Make sure it is the catylized type and not the old "tooth paste tube" type of air dry glaze putty that was used when dinosaurs roamed.

If they are unopened they may be worth a lot of money someday when people have "body repair" museums. You probably know first hand ,then, how these products and their abuse contributed greatly to the bad rap that "bondo" still has to this day. Back in '71 when I worked in my first dealership body shop , everybody in the shop used it. I thought it was a waste of time even then. I would just use some good "juicy" bondo and a lot of pressure and just glaze the pits full that way. Finished my jobs a lot quicker than the rest AND they STAYED lookin' good. You know what I mean.

Aww, shucks! Do you think i'm going to toss a perfectly good tube of dinosaur putty, just when they are finding ways to bring them back to life?
