Copied this off the Studebaker forum website:

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ..... ..... ..... 516 pounds .
WD-40 ..... ..... .. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ..... ... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ..... .. 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

I was told that peroxide would work. I tried it recently on some stuck bolts and it worked where WD 40 didn't. Just another input.

[quote:a50087c621]GM has one that is both a penetrant and a rust remover. It's designed to be used on heat pipes on exhaust manifolds. It's a clingy type and works well.

try pure undiluted antifreeze straight from the jug. works great as a penetrating fluid and a soaking fluid. too bad it's not avaiable in a spray can.

Very interesting. I know WD stands for Water Displacing and I quit using it as a penetrant years ago (keep a can for wet ignitions though). I have both Kroil and Blaster and find Blaster works better unless I'm going to heat the part, in which case Kroil seems to work better. I use ATF for soaking since it's chaeap and I'm not in a hurry. Haven't tried the ATF/acetone mix.

Thank you. I'll try it. Might be the trick for a stuck engine.
