Posted this on the tranporting board too, hoping to catch knowlege somewhere.

I got a 5th wheel set up from a local auction. It has the plate on a crossbar, 2 large u-shaped hoops that go from the crossbar down to the bed, and 2 rails that would then go across the bed. My question is, how does this install to the bed?It doesn't seem like bolting the rais to the bed, not the frame, would be a good idea. I can't imagine it supporting the weight even if I bolted it thru the bed support crossrails.

Should there be supports across the bed underneath, then drill and bolt? Do the rails goe under the bed and then drill holes for the hoop legs to go thru? If it should have support, what size? 2x2 box bolted to the frame?

Also, should it be centered over the axle, or slightly forward?

Many thanks. I'll have to look for the angles, don't remepber if I got them with it or not. If not I got a ton of steel and I'll make some supports. Thanks again!

I have one on my 1980 chev truck but mine is a flat bed. Yes it need to be forward of the rear axle just a little bit. On my flat bed I was able to mount it yo the cross beams but there bolted right to the frame and are heavy C iron beams. So yes in some way it needs to be bolted/hooked to the frame but something as heavy as the frame of the truck or heavier.

I have the fifth wheel on my old 88 Chevy ton job. The welding shop that installs a lot of this kind of stuff told me to set it forward 7 inches. I have heard several different measurments but went with what they said. I bought mine used that came off another Chevy and it came with under the bed supports. Actually my fifth wheel is on the trailer and just a pin in the truck.
