Help, I inherited a restoration job on a Allis B. I need to wire the original 6 volt regulator. It has three leads on the regulator. One says BAT, one says F and one says L. This tractor has no lights and runs off a mag. How do you wire this to the generator and amp gauge. If I run the armature wire to the L pole this thing will short the battery to ground. This leaves me with a BAT and F pole to connect to. What gives?
I am also having the same problems with a NAA. The NAA was even wired with a new harness and the directions followed. I am starting to feel real stupid here. It can't be this hard. Both are positive ground.
I am just an auto tech instructor who has now gotten sucked into helping the Ag teacher in the restoration of these two ...older than I am tractors. I have been forced to re-read an antique(1947) auto repair book just to find a drawing of a 2 pole regulator. I only have two working neurons and need some help here. Thanks

I suspect like Jon you have a 4 terminal VR BAT ARM FLD LOAD in which on most the ARM terminal is off on one side by itself or the bottom while BAT FLD LOAD are together side by side....

They wire:

BAT on VR to Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter.... ARM on VR to gennys ARM post FLD on VR to gennys FLD post L feeds hot battery voltage up to any light or ignition switch via the BAT input terminal on any such switches.

If it had only a 3 terminal (BAT ARM FLD) VR before, the lights or ignition get hot battery voltage via the ammeters Load terminal, same place that wires down to BAT on the VR.

The lights or ign if it were a battery coil ignition, will still work if fed off the ammeters load terminal (one that wires to BAT on VR) and you could ignore L on the VR orrrrr r disconnect the ligth switch feed from the ammeter n serve it instead from L on that 4 terminal VR..... ....

The little two relay regulators often have the A armature lug under the regulator with the BAT, F and L lugs sticking out the side. In your situation, nothing goes on the L lug and the F goes tp F or fld on the generator. A or arm lug to the A generator terminal.

yep, I saw the lug underneath. The wiring diagram I got with the harness never mentioned that. I kinda figured that was it but did not want to make anymore smoke happen than needed. Thanks
A bunch for the help. you have been more than kind.
