I am restoring a 1952 oliver 88 gas row crop and am having problems with the timing and have dropped a spring down the rear end pan and need some creative ideas to get it out

I too have restored an Oliver 88. (and have 3 more to go.)

I take it that the top cover is off the trans and rear drive units. If so the magnet is the best tool to have around.

If the top is not off, then by all means, remove it. Not only will this make retrieving the spring easier, but will allow you to look over the internal parts for broken or worn out parts.

If the trans cover is like all I have seen, it will be cracked around the hump for the axle gears and need welding anyway.

Go down to the hardware store and get a magnet thats on the end of a extendable or flexible shaft. You should be able to probe around and retrieve it. Its one of the handiest tools in the box and you will use it again. Good luck , we have all had the same situation at one time or another.
