Has any one used E85 and sand to clean a rusty gas tank ? What have you found is the best way to go about this.

We had a gas tank that was from a Farmall H, it had been empty for a long time and was bone dry inside.

Dad put about a coffee cup of 1/4" nuts in it, replaced the cap and strapped the tank to the rear wheel of a M, then told my little brother to go ride around for about an hour.

When he removed it he dumped out the nuts and the tank was super clean inside. He sealed the tank with a product that he got at a motorcycle shop in town.

Local repair shop has essentially a rotissery system setup -- they clamp the tank in the rotissery, add some abrasive product and rotate it for a number of hours; next they rotate the tank 90-degrees and rotate it along the next axis for a few more hours. Then a clean and purge and like the gentleman said coat it with the red stuff.

Fill it full of coarse gravel and kero, throw it into the back of the truck, and drive around for a couple of weeks.

Works pretty well.

Any good size motorcycle shop will carry a two part gas tank sealer.I have used this product with great success in the past but cannot remember the name. This product is white and when it set's up it has a marble like finish that rust, solvent's,or just about any chemical will not harm.

I just whack'em with a rubber hammer then rinse them out with water. Let'em dry and coat the inside with Red Kote.

Sounds like a bomb to me. I would be worried about a spark!

You are probably right. I heard a guy make a statement one time that E85 was great to clean rusty tanks. I have four to do sometime soon and I thought about that statement. Not worth the gamble.

The E85 acts as a solvent to lift the old varnish from the evaporated gas. Doesn't do a thing for rust.

I flushed mine with acetone, then did the nut trick, then soap, water, dry, and lined. POR-15 the outside prior to paint.
