I have a 1950 M which me & a buddy are resurrecting. It was locked up when I bought it, and we are still in the process of putting various sorts of fox pee in the cylinders to free them up. We only today managed to beat the front pulley off of the crankshaft, which will have to be replaced due to the numerous areas which no longer are in their original condition, but the main question I have for now is, can the flywheel be taken off without splitting the tractor, & if so, how? The Lift-All is out, as well as the clutch assembly. We have yet to unbolt the cranks from the crankshaft, but it seems once that is done, if the flywheel can be removed through the Lift-All port, the crankshaft should be able to be removed through there also. Any comments & suggestions would be much appreciated. P.S. to the rest of you newbies out there, I just tipped over my H, & praise God neither of us is any worse for the wear. If you ever have such a mishap, be aware that the starter can get jammed into the ring gear enough to keep it from doing anything besides producing a very faint click. Pull starting it solved the problem in my case, & the only thing hurt was my pride. Thanks very much for your help.

I agree with Jerry split the tractor. You will do a much better job and will access a lot of places that need cleaned.

I've been told you can get the clutch and flywheel off without splitting on the H & M. I have never done it. Check the archives.

Split the tractor in two pieces before you ruin some expensive parts. Trying to replace the crank without turning the engine upside down and doing it correctly is asking for trouble.

Better to look inside and say "Glad we split it apart", rather than getting it finally running and then saying "Wish we had split it apart".
