I have an 80 year old neighbor who tried to convert his tractor to 12volt.. I have it mostly done,,found all nuts and bolts.. I do not follow where resistor in gen.light wiring goes. He did not buy a "kit" he actually bought from a n amish electrical shop.. Doesn"t seem right to me.....can anyone help?????

I have done a number of 4020 24V to 12V conversions, and the only resistor in the gen light circuit I know of is some early models have an inline resistor under the cowl near the gen light. This resistor plugs inline in the gen light wire and needs to be REMOVED when going to 12V. I have yet to see a case where the current flow through the gen light, is not enough to excite a Delco 10-12 SI alternator, so no other resistor should be needed.

A resistor or diode would be needed if the alternators #1 excite wire was connected to the ignition switch, but when it is connected through the gen light, it is not necessary as the gen light serves as a current limiting resistor,AND the light will function as intended as a charge indicator.
