I have a Cub Cadet 1250 Hydro mower from the 70's I believe. It ran great last fall and now I try to start it and it turns over but wont start. I swapped out the fuel because I thought it might be stale but still the same result. It will crank until the battery dies, should I change the plug and wire next? How can I test to see if they are still functional? What else should I look for?

Thanks!

Turns out there was a loose wire from the starter grounding out on the frame and it must not have been getting power when under compression??

I dunno but with a properly placed wire she fires up real nice now!

thanks for all the help...

Quite guessing about the spark and actually get to checking it.. if it has spark.. try start fluid.. if it starts on start fluid then dies.. it's carb..

As Carl (Billy Bob Thornton) said in the movie Sling Blade "Its probably the points um huh)"

Joe, Make sure theres NOOOOO gas in the carb n remove the spark plug wire but secure its end within 1/4 inch or so away from a metal part of the engine n when turned on n cranked over you ought to get a good spark jumping that gap..... If that happens then attach the wire to the removed spark plug and have its side/threads against the engines metal n crank her over n see if the plug actually fires..... ... If not but the unattached wire does ITS A BAD PLUG..... However if even the wire dont spark Id suspect the points (if it uses points) are burned or carboned or pitted or not gapped correct. You may try n use a points file to clean them or if only gray oxide covered a good clean/buff/polish may cure them) If the poinst are okay then id suspect the condensor (if it has one). Other problems may be the ignition switch (or its wiring) isnt delivering hot voltage to the coil when switched ON which a simple test lamp or hot wiring the coil can determine. If its noneeeee ee of the above it could be a coil or wiring problem ALSO make sure theres no kill switch or kill switch wiring to the points which may be bad that shorts the points out all the time. On some small engines that kill wire leads to the carb where it grounds out the points at shut down throttle/carb position. CAUTION DO NOT allow gas or gas vapor out the spark plug hole to shoot gas anywhere near those sparks tests above, thats why I say NO GAS IN THe CARB.

Alright....I tried the spark plug test and it had a nice blue spark when the engine was cranked so the plug/wire are good. I again drained the fuel and put in new stuff and its still a no go...engine cranks over but wont start It started hard a few times last year is there anything else I should check out that it may be? Im new to this stuff so bear with me and thanks for the help!

If after cranking n she dont start pull the plug n see if its wet or dry to see if shes getting fuel or not. Even though the plug fired Id still try a new one just in case as they dont cost much. If she still fires n theres a new plug then Id suspect a fuel problem ESPECIALLY if the plug comes out dry. If she is cranking over good try a lil starting fluid n if she fires on that okay you know its again back to a fuel starvation problem such as the carbs float or needle n seat or the fuel line or any fuel filters etc.

Pull the plug out and then hook the plug wire back to it. Hold the spark plug some place on the engine where it is metal and turn the engine over. If it has a good white/blue spark then its a fuel problem if it doesn't then its a problem with the points if it has points or could even be a bad plug
