Please give me any tips in prepping the battery compartment of a tractor to help prevent future rust-out.

Thanks, GaryBob

Powdercoating is nice but it is only as good as the base preperation.

Once the coating is scratched and corrosion grabs hold then the powdercoating will start to blister and lift. Ideally if the base is galvanised then this will help. No matter what you use, longevity will be greatly determined by the amount of basic preparation.

Well as an advicate of power coating, I would like so see some 'scratch ' .060 thk expoxy powder coating. No possible! it is impervious to rocks thrown at 65 mph ( I have powder coated many under carraige and suspension parts over 35 years without any damage. I will agree that preperation is key to any coating, be it plating, paint, bedliner material or power coating.

Has anyone used or is familiar with powder coating? Impervious to acid, oil, salt water. Any part that can be 'sand blasted' and heated to 400 degrees for 20 minutes will quailfy. The powder is an expoxy resin that is applied electrostaically. All machined surfaces and treaded holes can be tapped or plugged . The powder is heated ( I've done complete automobile frames, so size isn't a problem), The coating is usually about .06 thick ( the thkness of a penny). And the colors are vast, the finish can vary from gloss to matte. Cost is comparible to paint. The practice has been in the industry for decades but ten years ago started a consummer customer nich. Look in the phone book or on line. I've done all the metal in my battery compartment of my motorcoach (8 batteries reside). The battery box in my boat as well.

what about spray galvanizing then epoxy paint? welders at offshore oil platforms use this method because the salt air and spray have the same effects as a acid battery on metal. just my 2 cents. d. coleman

In the past I have purchased an aersol can of bed liner material. I also have used it on the inside of fenders and it prevents rust and chips. Most all automotive shops carry it.

clean and paint the compartment, then run only an Optima or Exide Orbital battery . they are a spiral cell AGM battery and produce no corrosive liquid or fumes. Another bonus is that they Have a very slow self discharge in a seldom used machine and will last a very long time with good care. I have one Optima that is still doing good at 15 years, some Exide orbitals at near 10 years old. Never a corroded cable or battery box.
