Ran compression test and got 50 psi across the board. He had an old guide which said cranking
pressure should be aprox 1350, wasn't specific on
units of measurment. Does anyone know the actual spec 4cyl gasoline
in psi.
Note: tractor is restored and in great shape

I hope he is not expecting 1350 lbs of compression from it!

Doubt it could stand that much compression.

If you have 50 one all four cylinders it would seem the loss would not be in the valves. When valves are bad it is usually one or two cylinders that will be low. I have a Farmall C that has one week cylinder. About 5 years ago I put a 1/2 can of Seafoam that I bought at NAPA in the oil and the other half in about three gallons of gas. I worked in on the drag fitting grouns for a coupla hours and the smoke cleared up. Won two firsts and a third in the 3000# class in pulling contests. It has only been run a few times in the last two years and last fall started missing on the same cylinder that was a problem before. I put in the Seafoam again last weekend along with a new set of plugs and ran it for two hours wide open. I hauled a load of manure with it after that and no miss or smoke. With the power coming up the first time, I am sure it was sticky rings in the one piston from setting before I bought the tractor.

I was going to try Z Max this time but NAPA didnt have it.

50PSI is no where near enough compression. At a min. it needs to be 90psi plus. A new engine will be around 150 plus. Now how long has it sat with out being run?? Was that test done cold or hot?? Did you also check it with a little oil in each cylinder?? Now with all that said it could have valves that need to be adjusted, valves that are sticking, and or sticking rings if it has say for a long time. My self the first thing I would do is put about 1/2 cup of ATF in each cylinder and let it sit a couple days and recheck compression and see it that helps.

Thank's, I was expecting around 100-125 psi.
but maybe one cylinder to be low. Did not perform
wet test. Tractor runs...are you sugesting that the cylinders have been washed or that the rings themselves are bad (on all four cyl.)?
Note: after performing some ignition tests fouled out the plugs. had trouble jumping a
25k volt gap on the rearward cylinder.

Well if say it sat for 6 months with out running any the rings could be stuck on the pistons and that will cause low PSI. Simple ATF in the cylinders will fix that most of the time

It takes history to know if the rings are bad or wore out if it is not laying on the bench. Anything would be an opinionated guess without hands on knowlage. One thing for sure if you are having plugs foul out you have blow by. If it is smoking you can be sure you have blow by. If you put your hand over the engine breather and feel a lot of pressure you know you have blow by. On the breather you will always have some blow by with a new engine but you can tell the difference. Blow by is caused from the combustion getting past the rings. You can rig air pressure on each spark plug hole and listen to where the air is leaking.
